-- Leader in broadband services to resell O3b services in Guyana --St. John, Jersey, Channel Islands, January 26, 2009 – O3b Networks, the developer of a new fibre-quality, satellite-based, global Internet backbone announced today that Quark Communications, Inc. has signed a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract for O3b Networks’ Quick Start service. O3b will provide Quark connectivity between Guyana and the global fibre infrastructure.
O3b Networks, funded principally by Google Inc., Liberty Global, Inc. and HSBC Principal Investments, announced it will deploy the world’s first ultra-low-latency, Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), Ka-band, fibre-speed satellite network. By providing operators an affordable solution for interconnecting with the global Internet, O3b Networks will significantly improve Internet access for millions of consumers and businesses in emerging and developing markets. Service activation is scheduled for late 2010.
“With less than 1% penetration of broadband Internet usage in Guyana, we feel we have a moral obligation to provide all Guyanese Internet access for educational, commercial, and medical purposes,” said Brian Yong, CEO and Founder of Quark Communications. “The problem has traditionally been that it is very expensive to connect into the global communications infrastructure. With O3b, we now have access to ‘fibre like’ connectivity at an affordable price.”
“As we rapidly expand our sales around the globe, we are pleased to announce Quark as our first customer in the Caribbean and Latin American region,” said John Finney, EVP of Sales and Marketing at O3b Networks. “For far too long, the business case for high capacity, high quality bandwidth has been too difficult for emerging markets to justify. At O3b, we are radically changing the economics of a low-latency, high bandwidth connection to the global fibre infrastructure. Our customers, around the globe, have seen benefits of our service offerings and are aggressively engineering an innovative and dynamic future for their communications networks.”
